I can’t believe by the end of the week we will all be counting down the seconds til midnight and ringing in 2017! Time flies when you are raising kids, teaching, blogging, and having fun ;0)
To kick off the New Year I wanted to talk a little bit about some tools I use in my classroom to enhance our Writer’s Workshop. I also included a freebie down below to help you get your kiddos stared writing right in 2017!
In my classroom we have 45 minutes for Writer’s Workshop everyday. I love this big chunk of time and it really allows for kiddos to find their groove in writing. I divide our time with a 10 minute mini-lesson, 25 minutes of writing and conferencing, then 10 minutes of sharing and a wrap up.
Our mini-lessons vary depending on what I am teaching but usually consist of using mentor texts, writing together as a class and sometimes my students watching me write as I talk through what I am doing.
I could talk forever about Writing but today I am focusing on the “Student Writing” aspect of Writer’s Workshop and tools you can give your kiddos to help them be more independent in their writing. Each of my kindies has a blue writing folder and a three ring binder. In their folders are laminated “tools” and the piece they are currently working on. Once a piece completes all the steps in the writing process it gets moved into the three ring binder. The binders store the kiddos writing chronologically. Students love going back and reading their writing from throughout the year. Ok so moving on to the tools…
I have tools that each child always has in their folder and tools that I switch out monthly that are shared with table groups.
The permanent folder tools are a “space man” to help with finger spaces, a laminated d’nealian letter poster to help with letter formation, a laminated letter sounds poster to help with letter sounds and a laminated check list to help the students double check that they are ready to conference or share. Throughout the first month of Writer’s Workshop the kiddos all learn how to use each one of these tools in a mini lesson and see me demonstrate using them in my own “writing”.
If you would like to check out these resources head over to the Kinderbirdies TPT Store and check out “Writer’s Workshop Notebook Resources“.
Monthly, I switch out some different tools that help me keep things fresh and interesting for my kiddos. I have different writing paper that the kids like to use depending on what they are writing about, laminated vocab words that are hole punched with a ring to be put at tables or displayed in pocket charts and laminated writing prompts that can help kiddos come up with an idea for their writing.
Here is a special New Year’s Freebie of Writing Prompt, Pages and Vocab Cards. Click the picture to be taken to my Kinderbirdies TPT Store to download.
I hope this helps to enhance your Writer’s Workshop and encourages your students to fall in love with Writing in 2017!
Happy Teaching and Happy New Year!
