This year at the iTeach K! conference in Las Vegas, my teammate and I were both lucky enough to win free memberships for ESGI (Educations Software for Guiding Instruction). ESGI is an online assessment website that says it “is the simplest, easiest to use assessment platform for conducting one-on-one assessments for emergent and non-readers”.
I was very excited to set this up and start using it with my kindies. We do a lot of beginning of the year assessments right out of the gate to gather info on our students. Honesty, it takes a long time and is a lot of paperwork. So, I was also really hoping that this program would be fast and easy like the company was advertising.
Well guess what?!? It is amazing! The website was very easy to set up with my new students and I was ready to start my assessments right away. I loved how the student just came and sat next to me to read the uppercase and lowercase assessments. All I had to do was click a “Y” or “N” and it moved on to the next letter.
That’s not even the best part. The website can formulate all of the data for you in a variety of ways. I can sort my students by ability, easily see what answers they got correct or incorrect and track their progress. You can also print parent reports that summarize the assessments and their child’s scores.
Another one of the features that is really cool is the flashcards. For each student you can print flashcards for the letters that they missed. So it’s like their own customized flashcard set. You could also print flashcards for sight words, math skills, etc.
There are assessments like uppercase/lowercase letters, sight words, and numbers that come already set up in your system. But, you can create your own assessments as well. There is even a online “community” of sorts where other teachers and teacher authors have uploaded assessments that they have used or that go along with their products.
Another great perk is that you can try ESGI for 60 days on a free trial. If you think this software is something that you could use in your classroom I would encourage you to give it a try. Click on the picture to read more about the 60 Day Free Trial.
Overall I am so happy with ESGI! I really haven’t found anything that I don’t like. It is so nice to have everything on my laptop, right there when I need it and it does save so much time like promised! That makes for one happy teacher!
